50 Shades of Chocolate

Grey is so….gray. Chocolate is better. Also you can’t dribble grey over your significant other and, well, whatever.

Also, there could well be 50 shades of chocolate. I’ve no idea. Brown is brown, chocolate is chocolate…but of course it isn’t. Chocolate is a whole world of bittersweet fantasmagorical wonderment. Combine it with cream and strawberries and you have a gourmet-gasm of amaze-balls. Sorry, getting carried away.

Lets get down to business, so to speak. It was pancake day yesterday and so we celebrated with Strawberries and Cream Pancakes with Chocolate Sauce.

The pancakes are superfluous (in the sense that you can make them from scratch, make them using a ready-made mix, or indeed buy them ready-made).

The cream is Chantilly cream – combine a pot of double cream with a tablespoon of icing sugar and a few drops of vanilla extract and then whisk.

The chocolate sauce is a bit special and is worth some analysis…

  • 1 bar dark chocolate (200g)
  • 175 ml milk
  • 2 tbsp double cream
  • 30g caster sugar
  • 30g butter, cold, cubed

First melt the chocolate in a bowl over a pan of simmering water (stir occasionally).

Once melted, remove the bowl from the heat and set aside…

Put the milk, cream and sugar in a small pan and bring to a simmer, whisking continuously. Pour the milk into the chocolate and whisk.

Add the butter cubes to the pan and whisk in…

Pour your chocolate sauce into a relevant storage utensil…

Make some pancakes…

And its time to put your pancakes together…

Unlike 50 Shades of Grey, these pancakes are not overrated.

  1. Haha, love this post! Fifty shades of chocolate indeed. Those pancakes look decadent and very romantic. All you need to do is call them crepes to really get some amaze-balls action going. I think I read that in a book somewhere.

By the way, this post reminds me that someone gave me a cookbook called Fifty Shades of Chicken, in which a shirtless man with a six pack makes preparing chicken look R-rated. I’ve never used it, but I confess, I did look at the pictures. The book is now smouldering somewhere on my bookshelf. (And why, I ask myself, am I writing about this?)

  2. I’d agree that those don’t look overrated at all. Sometimes it’s good to have something to put chocolate on although you could have handed me the bottle of chocolate & I would have been fine.
I had a chocolate craving the other night & my husband was a true hero to brave the snow & cold to go buy me some truffles. On the way home, he took a corner that the snowplow had torn up the pavement & his back tire hit that, blowing the tire out. Since he’d just bought the tires & had an alignment done 1 week before, he wasn’t very happy. The truffles were excellent but I’m not sure worth the more than $500 for a new tire plus another alignment – I have a feeling I’d better not say anything about chocolate cravings in front of him for a while.

    • That is a dramedy right there. I’ve been digging out fingers of that chocolate sauce from the fridge all week – its gone like a soft truffle. Its really too much. Well worth a tyre and a realignment.
