Pork And Bratwurst Casserole – Cooking with an iPad and Dealing with the Cookie Monster

About a year ago we decided to purchase a tablet. Not the Ecstasy or Viagra type. The shiny look-no-keyboard type. Now the smart money goes with an iPad. For everyone else there’s the Samsung. We (I) chose the latter. It works. Just. It’s spent most of the time shoved in the bookshelf (right next to the Kindle) gathering dust. If anybody remembers it’s there they get it out and then ask:

‘Where’s the charger’?….’Don’t know’.

And then it goes back on the bookshelf. Well anyway one day I found the charger, charged it up and looked for a recipe for barbeque sauce. I found a Martha Stewart version and got bizeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

I followed Martha’s BBQ recipe (more or less) and then to that added pork belly strips and funny German sausages (and chucked in a bit of onion to placate the ‘where’s-the-vitamins-in-this-bad-boy’ voice in my head.

Ingredients

BBQ marinade (from Martha)

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon mustard powder
  • 1 teaspoon red-pepper flakes
  • 3 tablespoons light-brown sugar
  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/3 cup cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • I stuck some soy sauce in for good measure

Everything else

  • Pork belly (about 4 or 5 slices)
  • 6 Bratwurst sausages
  • 500 ml Passata
  • 1 tin of butter beans

First off chop the onion and garlic up and put in a big shiny steel bowl:

Look at the wear and tear on that…

Now add all the other BBQ marinade ingredients:

Stir it up and add the pork belly:

Cover with cling film, find a picture on the tablet that looks like what you want to create eventually and then photograph:

Leave to marinate for an hour or two. Now, what is the relevance of the Cookie Monster in the title of this post? Well this creation has to be palatable to the Fussy Eater, who incidentally loves wearing the new fad, called ‘Onesies’. Here he has turned into the Cookie Monster (albeit a rather spaced out version of that infamous blue, biscuit-chomping Sesame Street star):

While Cookie Monster awaits his meal take the pork out of the bowl and bake in a sealed foil package for an hour or so:

While thats cooking away in the oven fry the bratwurst in a pan and try to brown all over – its not easy because those suckers are curved:

Drain the fat off the pork strips and trim off any fat on the meat. Chop up the meat and put in your handy orange pot:

Chop up the sausage and put it in the pot:

Pour in the passata and remaining BBQ marinade. Add the beans:

Cook in the oven at about 180 centigrade for an hour. Get it out and look at the sheer loveliness of what you have created:

Serve up with some mashed potato and utterly pointless greenery:

So how did this go down, what did the Cookie Monster make of it? He liked it well enough…

As for iPads I only really get on with one type:

  1. I’m addicted to my iPad. I even have a cabinet mount for it to keep it off the counter while I’m cooking. I don’t use it much for that though. I like my good old fashioned cookbooks.
    Great looking casserole! Total winter comfort food.

  2. Wow – you actually found a Martha recipe that doesn’t take 10 hrs. prep time, 14 pots & ‘staff’ to whip it up…I’m impressed. Looks like an amazing casserole though, especially adding the mashed spuds on the side. But really – that’s you under the Cookie Monster outfit isn’t it?

      • Well she fooled me once w/a multi layer fruit ice cream kind of cake. My bad – after spending $68 on fresh fruit I read the details of making this magnificent 6 layer thing. Total time = 14 HOURS (layers went into the freezer). Didn’t have 14 hr. so I sent my husband out to get 4 more pans = $32. All the while I’m swearing “this woman belongs in jail” with my husband reminding me she was there….but not for the ‘right’ reason. Finally got it made & it was okay but pretty much tasted like 6 layers of different flavored sherbets. Guess that’s why it helps to have staff. Oh-oh I think I just took over poor Trixfred’s blog with a Martha rant – I’m sorry my friend, really.

        • No I’ve been there – £15 for a chocolate mould to make teascakes from the Great British Bake Off (You’re going to get an American version so I hear/read) And now i can’t think of anything to do with it

          • Funny how once you commit to making something you just keep buying whatever they tell you you need. That was a seriously expensive dessert though – I could have gone into Boston & eaten at the chocolate bar all afternoon at Le Fleur for less! So what are you going to do with the chocolate mould?

          • to be honest i don’t know because I’ve already managed to lose it. I think its in the ‘cupboard under the stairs’ and if it is in there…its as good as gone.

      • Sorry, I hijacked your blog w/a Martha rant. I do know someone who used to work for her (not a good experience according to her) & if you look at her magazine where she’s standing in the kitchen, or even more funny – standing w/a shovel in her gardens) she doesn’t have a speck of dirt or cooking goop on her. Personally I never cook or garden while wearing the crown jewels. But you got lucky it sounds like you made a winner.

  3. I think the iPads and tablets are a generational thing. Me, I need a real keyboard. Cookie Monsters are known to like ketchup besides cookies. Casserole is lovely…did Martha say anything about grilling/frying the pork belly before adding the marinade?

  4. ‘Utterly pointless greenery’ – love it! Very funny post, and the meal looks good too. I’ve been thinking about doing the iPad (sorry, did I just gloat) display and food shot too, but now it’ll look like I’m copying you. Great minds … 🙂
