Blogging 101 – Beef and Onion Pie

Food. It inspires. It sustains. Its my reason for being. There are other things that matter but right now I can’t remember what they are. Oh, thats right, wine matters too. (No it really does). So in my ‘Bucket List’ of food items pies have to be in the top 5 (just under steak and eggs I reckon). And so for this creation I went for a steak-based pie.

A seething morass of meat and vegetables

To make Steak and Onion Pie you will need:

  • Steak chunks
  • Shallots
  • Parsley
  • Tomato puree
  • Beef stock
  • Flour
  • Salt and pepper
  • Puff pastry (go on, buy it ready made)
  • Egg

First coat the beef in seasoned flour.

Then fry in olive oil for a couple of minutes to get it all browned up:

Take the beef out of the pan and set aside. Now fry the shallots in the gooey oily floury mess:

Now add some stock (and wine if it just so happens to be at hand). Then add back the beef and put a nice big dollop of tomato puree into the mix:

Now cook it down for half an hour or so, adding more stock as needed. Then add the parsley:

Transfer the filling to a pie dish:

Now cover with an extra thick layer of puff pastry and brush with beaten egg:

Bake for about 25 minutes (not too hot) until it’s all golden brown and basically delicious:

Now, you have to serve this baby with mashed potatoes (with butter mixed in) and some boring mixed veg (if you must)

Bless those carrots, peas, beans and sweetcorn. They are trying!

What’s on your food Bucket List?

  1. Shouldn’t chicken out on the oxtails – dead easy oven braise with veg and a bottle of wine and in a few hours a gorgeous sticky eat-with-your-fingers dinner. And the way this summer is going, just about perfect for this weather…

  2. What I love best about your recipes is that they don’t require fuss and measuring! My son would love this one and given these step-by-step photos, it’s the sort of dinner he would try making himself! Excellent!

  3. I love the mountain of beef. I have just finished my healthy Monday fish dinner and I am hungry looking at the beefy goodness.
    Best,
    Conor

ps: On the bucket list is Braised Oxtails. Believe it or not, Oxtails are getting difficult to get. They are ‘fashionable’ at present so lots of them go to restaurants. Punters will pay way over the price of a fillet for couple of pieces of cow tail. I live and I learn…
