The English are good at doing a lot of things half-arsed. Public transport, Olympic stadia, politics, cable TV, car industry, steak – the list goes on. However one thing we know how to do properly is breakfast. No messing about with cheeses, melon balls and croissants (sorry Europe), none of this pouring syrup over bacon, and gravy over biscuits (what’s that all about America?). In the UK we do breakfasts that ‘set in’, preparing you for the busy, active, constructive day ahead (or you might just end up sitting on the sofa blogging).
Who said a cooked breakfast is bad for you? 3 of your 5 a day are right here!
To create the classic English Breakfast you will need:
- Pork sausages
- Back bacon
- Black pudding
- Portobello mushrooms
- Baked beans
- Cherry tomatoes on the vine
- Crusty bread
- Hash browns
- Olive oil
- Salt and pepper
The secret to the perfect English Breakfast is timing – bringing everything together, cooked to perfection!
Start with the sausages, cooking in a bit of oil over a low heat for about 7 mins, turning to keep them cooking evenly, then add the bacon and carry on. After about 10 mins add the black pudding.
While this pan of salty fatty loveliness is spitting away put the hash browns in a medium hot oven. Then put your big mushrooms and tomatoes on the vine on a tray and drizzle with olive oil and worcestershire sauce. Put these in the oven too, for about 10 to 15 minutes.
Now the eggs. The easiest way to do eggs is on a big skillet. Also heat up your beans in the microwave and toast some thickly sliced crusty bread.

Now serve it up – pour the mushroom juices in the pan back into the mushroom:
Ketchup and HP Sauce are obligatory, as is tea (or coffee)
Proof children can be made to be quiet for periods of up to 20 minutes.
