Now I’m well used to ‘Cooking with Wine’. What about ‘Cooking with Kids’ – would that taste as good. Would that be as relaxing? I’m used to cooking for kids. But what happens if you reverse the roles? Get them to cook for you. What happens? Lets find out. First you need to get them to come up with a menu. We went for a three course meal, to be prepared by an 11 year old, for his Scout cooking badge.
Would you eat anything prepared by a child?
The starter was Prawn Cocktail, with a main course of Creamy Smoked Salmon Spaghetti. An optional dessert of pancakes and ice cream was pencilled in but we postponed it due to being too stuffed.
- Cooked prawns
- Thousand island dressing
- Iceberg lettuce
- Cherry tomatoes
- Spring onions
First prepare the Prawn Cocktail. Mix some prawns in thousand island dressing.
Put some chopped up iceberg lettuce into some serving bowls and mix in some chopped tomatoes. Spoon over some prawns and then put the bowls in the fridge to chill. Child difficulty rating – Easy.
Now the main course:
Creamy Smoked Salmon Spaghetti
- Couple of packs of smoked salmon
- Dried spaghetti
- Creme fraiche
- Cream cheese
- Lemon juice
Put the spaghetti on to boil (we decided parental supervision was required). Then in a pan gently heat the creme fraiche and cheese until it is a smooth mix, add the chopped up salmon and lemon juice.

Now stir in the cooked pasta using two forks to mix it all up.
Put a lid on the pasta to keep it warm while the starter is served up. For those who don’t like prawns, tomato soup makes an excellent substitute!

Then serve up the pasta…
…and have an arm wrestling competition instead of dessert.
Of course then there is the washing up. Now guess who ends up doing that?
